The article examines the history of the formation, development, and preservation of the library heritage of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU), with particular emphasis on the Central Library established in Cairo in 1911. Based on the study of archival documents, correspondence, catalogues, and administrative reports, the ideological foundations behind the establishment of the library, the mechanisms of collection development, and the contributions of individual benefactors and AGBU branches to the enrichment of its holdings are revealed. The research demonstrates that the library served not only as a center for preserving cultural heritage but was also intended to support educational institutions and contribute to the intellectual advancement of Armenian society.
The article further explores the subsequent reorganization of the library, issues related to the classification and preservation of its collections, and the evaluation and reclassification initiatives undertaken during the 1970s. Particular attention is devoted to the history of the formation of the "Agathon" Library, the Central Library collections that constituted its foundation, and the bibliographic wealth accumulated through later donations. The study also presents data on the early printed books and manuscripts preserved within the library, highlighting their significance for the study of Armenian printing history and cultural heritage. The research confirms that AGBU's library activities played a significant role in preserving Armenian diasporic identity, organizing educational and cultural life, and ensuring the transmission of Armenian book heritage to future generations
